I was sitting talking with some good friends Derek and Tracy the other day, and the topic of community service came up. The question was, how do we as business owners and individuals contribute back to the community in which we live. After much disucussion and research, we settled on Habitat for Humanity.
If you are not familliar with habitat for humanity, it is a charitable, community and faith-based organization working for a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. Their mission is to mobilize volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promoting home ownership as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty. You can read more about Habitat at www.habitatdurham.com.
My friends, who own a home rennovation company called Better Living Home and Garden Contracting, together with Keyes To Health are teaming up to help Habitat in Durham Region to collect 10, 000, 000 (that's 10 million!!) pennies, which is the equivalent of one hundred thousand dollars, the cost of one Habitat home.
The ultimate goal of the campaign is to collect a total of $690 million pennies Canada-wide in order to help each of Habitat's 69 Canadian affiliates give the hand up of homeownership to one more low-income family.
Help us help Habitat Durham help local families break that cycle of poverty through affordable home ownership. Drop in to Keyes To Health and drop off your pennies. Every penny counts!
